[How we work](https://cyanorbit.com/process)

Odoo covers a wider operational surface from one system than most CRM or point-solution platforms: inventory, manufacturing, accounting, purchasing, HR and sales sit on a shared data model instead of being separate products a company has to integrate by hand. Our odoo development company work covers custom module development in Python against Odoo's ORM, front-end work in OWL where the standard views do not fit a workflow, and the integration layer connecting Odoo to a payment processor, a shipping carrier or an existing e-commerce storefront.

Community and Enterprise are a real decision, not a formality: Community is free and covers a genuinely wide range of operational needs, while Enterprise adds modules (advanced manufacturing, full accounting in some regions, studio-based customization tools) that some businesses need and many do not. We scope that choice against the specific modules a business actually requires rather than defaulting to Enterprise because it is the newer-looking option.

A cost we flag early and often is the upgrade between major Odoo versions. Odoo ships a new major version every year, and custom modules written against one version's API do not always carry forward cleanly, which makes the real, ongoing cost of a customized Odoo installation the upgrade path more than the initial build.

Fit

## When Odoo is the right choice, and when it is not

### Good fit

- The business runs operational processes, inventory, manufacturing, purchasing, accounting, alongside CRM, and wants them on one data model instead of integrating several separate systems
- Standard Odoo modules cover most of the requirement, with a smaller number of workflow-specific gaps that custom module development can fill without rebuilding the whole system
- The team has or plans to have someone who owns the Odoo installation long-term, since a heavily customized instance needs a person watching upgrades and module compatibility
- Cost control matters and Odoo Community's module set already covers what the business needs, avoiding Enterprise licensing for modules that would go unused

### Consider something else

- The core need is CRM and sales pipeline management without significant operational (inventory, manufacturing, accounting) complexity; Salesforce or HubSpot fit that narrower need with less setup
- The business needs an ERP so specific to its industry or process that the amount of custom module development required to bend Odoo's data model to fit approaches the cost of building a purpose-built system from the ground up
- There is no plan for who maintains the installation after launch; a customized Odoo instance that nobody upgrades or patches accumulates the same kind of technical debt any unmaintained system does, and Odoo's yearly release cycle makes that debt compound faster than most platforms
- The requirement is a single, narrow workflow (a booking calendar, a simple invoicing tool) where Odoo's breadth adds setup and licensing overhead for capability the business will not use

What we build

## What we build with Odoo

- ### Custom module development
New Odoo modules written in Python against its ORM, extending existing models or adding new ones, following Odoo's own module structure so the code upgrades alongside the platform rather than fighting it.
- ### OWL front-end customization
Custom views and widgets built in OWL, Odoo's own JavaScript framework, for workflows where the standard list, form or kanban view does not match how a team actually works.
- ### Community versus Enterprise scoping
A module-by-module comparison of what Community covers against what Enterprise adds, so the licensing decision follows the business's actual requirements instead of a default assumption either way.
- ### Odoo.sh and self-hosted deployment
Deployment on Odoo.sh, Odoo's own managed hosting with built-in staging and CI, or self-hosted on infrastructure the business controls, chosen against data residency needs and who will operate the servers.
- ### Third-party and e-commerce integration
Connections to payment processors, shipping carriers and external storefronts through Odoo's API, keeping inventory and order data synchronized with systems outside Odoo itself.
- ### Version upgrade planning
Assessment of custom modules against an incoming major version before committing to an upgrade window, since Odoo's yearly release cycle can break customizations that were not written defensively.

## Odoo Community versus Enterprise

Community is free, open source, and covers sales, inventory, purchasing, basic accounting and a wide range of operational modules well enough for many businesses to run on it without paying for Enterprise at all. Enterprise adds a per-user license fee in exchange for modules Community does not include, more advanced manufacturing planning, full accounting compliance for some countries, Studio's no-code customization tool, and official support from Odoo itself.

The decision comes down to which specific modules a business needs, not a general sense that Enterprise is the safer or more complete choice. We map the requirement against both editions' module lists before recommending one, since paying for Enterprise modules a business will not use adds ongoing cost without adding capability that matters to that business.

## The real cost is the upgrade, not the build

Odoo releases a new major version annually, and each release can change model fields, method signatures and view structures that custom modules depend on. A business that customizes Odoo heavily and then skips upgrades for several years faces a much larger migration project than one that upgrades every cycle, because the gap between the installed version and the current one grows every year it is deferred.

We write custom modules defensively, using Odoo's documented extension points rather than monkey-patching core behavior, specifically to reduce what breaks at the next major version. We also tell clients upfront that an Odoo installation with meaningful customization is not a build-once system: it needs a maintenance relationship, whether with us or an internal team, that plans for the next upgrade rather than treating go-live as the end of the project.

- A new major version ships every year, and custom modules can break against it
- Modules written against documented extension points upgrade more predictably than ones that patch core code
- Ongoing maintenance capacity matters more for Odoo than for a platform with a slower release cycle

## Odoo.sh versus self-hosting

Odoo.sh, Odoo's own managed hosting platform, bundles staging environments, automated testing on each commit and version upgrade tooling into the hosting itself, which removes a meaningful amount of DevOps work for a team that does not want to run that infrastructure. Self-hosting gives full control over the server, backup strategy and data location, which matters more for organizations with specific data residency requirements or existing infrastructure they want Odoo to run alongside.

We recommend Odoo.sh for teams without dedicated infrastructure capacity who want the platform's built-in staging and upgrade tooling, and self-hosting for organizations with a specific regulatory or infrastructure reason to keep the database on their own servers.

FAQ

## Odoo FAQs

Should we use Odoo Community or Enterprise for our business?

It depends on which specific modules you need. Community covers sales, inventory, purchasing and basic accounting well for many businesses at no license cost. Enterprise adds modules like advanced manufacturing planning, Studio's customization tool and full accounting compliance for certain countries. We compare your actual requirements against both editions' module lists rather than defaulting to Enterprise.

How much does upgrading Odoo to a new major version typically cost?

It depends heavily on how much custom module and OWL front-end work exists in your installation and whether it was written against documented extension points or patches to core behavior. An installation with light customization and regular annual upgrades tends to cost far less to upgrade than one that skipped several versions with heavy custom code, since the gap to close grows every year an upgrade is deferred.

Is Odoo a good fit if we mainly need CRM, not operations software?

Usually not on its own merits. If your core need is sales pipeline and customer relationship management without significant inventory, manufacturing or accounting complexity, Salesforce or HubSpot typically fit with less setup, since Odoo's value comes from unifying operational modules a CRM-only business will not use.

What is the difference between Odoo.sh and self-hosting?

Odoo.sh is Odoo's managed hosting platform, bundling staging environments, automated testing and upgrade tooling into the hosting itself, which reduces the DevOps work a team needs to do. Self-hosting gives full control over the server and data location, which matters for organizations with specific residency requirements, at the cost of running that infrastructure themselves.

When does a custom-built ERP make more sense than customizing Odoo?

When the business's process is specific enough that bending Odoo's data model to fit it would require so much custom module development that the effort approaches building a purpose-built system from scratch. At that point, Odoo's advantage, a large set of standard modules already built, stops applying, and a custom ERP avoids fighting a data model designed for a different shape of business.

What does custom Odoo module development actually involve?

New Python code written against Odoo's ORM, extending existing models or defining new ones, paired with OWL front-end work when the standard list, form or kanban view does not match the workflow. We follow Odoo's own module structure and documented extension points so the customization is positioned to survive the platform's next major version upgrade.
