How we work

Our work as a branding agency starts with positioning: what the company does, who it competes against, and why a buyer should choose it over the alternative they were already evaluating. Everything downstream, the name direction, the identity system, the guidelines, gets built to carry that positioning rather than to look appealing in isolation.

Most of our branding clients are founders or marketing leads at a software company launching a new product or repositioning an existing one, often at the same time as a technical rebuild. That timing matters: a brand that only exists as a static PDF falls apart the first time it meets a real product interface, a sales deck and a careers page built by three different people. We hand off a system specific enough that graphic design and UI/UX design can apply it consistently without coming back to ask what the brand actually means.

We support naming exploration, territory mapping and trademark screening coordination, but we are not a law firm; final trademark clearance runs through your legal counsel. Logo execution, color and type systems, and the guideline document are ours to deliver in full.

What we deliver

Branding services

  • Positioning and messaging strategy

A clear statement of what you do, for whom, and why that beats the alternative, plus core messaging pillars your sales and marketing teams can build from consistently.

  • Naming exploration

Structured naming territories and candidate names, with linguistic and domain-availability screening; final trademark clearance is handled by your legal counsel.

  • Identity system

Logo, color palette, typography and a usage system designed to work across a product interface, a sales deck and a careers page without looking like three brands.

  • Brand guidelines

A documented reference covering logo usage, color and type rules, voice and tone, so any team member or outside vendor applies the brand the same way without asking.

  • Voice and tone framework

Written guidance on how the brand sounds in a landing page, a support email and a sales call, with concrete examples of on-brand and off-brand copy.

  • Launch asset kit

The initial set of assets a rebrand or launch needs on day one: website header, social profile kit, email signature and a starter deck template.

How we work

Our branding process

  1. Discovery and competitive review

Interviews with founders and customer-facing staff, plus a review of how direct competitors position themselves, to find the gap the brand should actually occupy.

  2. Positioning workshop

A working session to test candidate positioning statements against real objections your sales team hears, not just internal preference.

  3. Naming and identity direction

Where naming is in scope, structured territories and candidates; in parallel, two or three visual identity directions grounded in the agreed positioning.

  4. Refinement

One direction developed in full across the range of applications it needs to survive: interface, deck, print, social profile.

  5. Guidelines and handoff

A documented guideline and a working session with your team, or ours, to make sure whoever applies the brand next actually understands the logic behind it.

Positioning before visual identity

A common mistake we see is a company hiring for a logo before deciding what the company actually is to a buyer. The logo gets picked on aesthetic preference, and six months later, once positioning finally gets decided, none of the visual choices support it.

We do positioning work first, even on engagements scoped mainly for identity design, because the visual decisions, color psychology, type weight, logo tone, only make sense once we know whether the company is positioning itself as the safe, established choice or the sharper alternative to an incumbent.

Building an identity that survives a real product

Brand guidelines built only against a website and a deck tend to fall apart the first time a product team tries to apply them inside a real interface, where color contrast, dark mode and component states impose constraints a print-oriented guideline never anticipated.

When branding and a software build run together, we coordinate directly with the UI/UX design team so the color system and type scale are chosen with interface accessibility in mind from the start, rather than handed over and quietly reworked later.

Budget

What drives cost and timeline

  • Naming scope

A full naming search with domain and trademark screening coordination takes longer than identity work alone for a name you have already settled on.

  • Number of applications

A brand that only needs to work on a website is a narrower scope than one that has to hold up across a product interface, print materials and a physical event booth.

  • Stakeholder count

More decision-makers in the review process generally means more rounds before a direction is approved.

  • Existing brand equity

A repositioning that keeps the existing name and some visual equity moves faster than a rebrand starting from an entirely blank page.

Compliance

Standards we design and build to

None of these is a certification or attestation held by this agency. They are the standards we design and build client systems to, so your own audit or assessment starts from a sound base.

  • GDPR / UK GDPR

Personal data handled on a lawful basis, with data minimisation and a documented retention policy.

  • HIPAA safeguards

Administrative, physical and technical safeguards applied where a system touches protected health information.

  • PCI DSS scope reduction

Card payment flows tokenised through a certified processor so cardholder data never touches your systems.

  • SOC 2 readiness

Access control, change management and audit logging built in from day one, ready for a client's own SOC 2 audit.

  • WCAG 2.2 AA

Keyboard navigation, colour contrast and screen-reader labelling checked against the AA success criteria.

  • OWASP ASVS

Authentication, session handling and input validation reviewed against the Application Security Verification Standard.

We list certifications only when they are real and current. See our security practices →

FAQ

Branding FAQs

Do you handle trademark registration for a new name?

No. We run structured naming exploration and initial screening for obvious conflicts and domain availability, but final trademark clearance and registration is legal work that runs through your own counsel. We coordinate timing with your legal team rather than replacing them.

How is branding different from graphic design services?

Branding defines the system: positioning, name direction, identity and guidelines. Graphic design applies that system to specific assets like decks, ads and social graphics on an ongoing basis. A branding engagement typically happens once, or once every few years; graphic design work continues after it as campaigns run.

Can you rebrand us without changing our name?

Yes, and it is common. A repositioning engagement can keep the existing name and update the positioning, messaging, visual identity and guidelines around it, which usually costs less and carries lower risk than a full name change with the domain and legal work that involves.

How long does a full branding engagement take?

A positioning and identity engagement without a naming component typically runs several weeks from discovery through final guidelines. Adding a full naming search with trademark screening coordination extends that, since candidate names have to clear multiple rounds before a final direction is safe to commit to.

Will the new brand work inside our existing product, not just marketing?

That is a specific requirement we ask about at discovery. If the brand needs to extend into a product interface, we design the color and type system with interface constraints like contrast and dark mode in mind, and coordinate directly with whoever is building the product, whether that is our UI/UX team or yours.

What do you need from us before a branding engagement starts?

Any existing brand materials, even outdated ones, plus access to whoever can speak to current positioning, target customers and known competitors. If a rebuild or new product launch is driving the timing, we also want visibility into that roadmap so the brand ships in step with it rather than behind it.
