Queues and Horizon as the backbone of background work
Nearly every real application accumulates work that should not happen inside the request-response cycle: sending an email, generating a PDF, calling a slow third-party API. Laravel's queue system moves that work onto workers that process jobs asynchronously, and Horizon gives visibility into what is queued, what failed and why, which matters once a team is running enough background work that manually tailing logs stops being practical.
We design queue architecture deliberately rather than defaulting everything to one queue: separating time-sensitive jobs (password reset emails) from bulk or slow jobs (report generation, large exports) onto different queues with different worker counts, so a backlog of slow jobs cannot delay something a user is actively waiting on.
